Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the impact of patient safety perception and knowledge on patient participation among inpatients of comprehensive nursing service wards.
Methods
Data were collected from 135 patients admitted to comprehensive nursing service wards at C University Hospital in Cheongju between December 19, 2022, to April 10, 2023. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 26.0, employing descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlations, and multiple regression analyses.
Results
The average scores for patient safety perception, patient safety knowledge, and patient participation were 4.37±0.48, 25.51±2.75, and 4.41±0.49, respectively. Patient participation scores were significantly higher in patients aged 20-39 (t=3.85, p=.023), those with one or fewer hospitalizations (t=2.31, p=.022), and those who received safety education (t=2.81, p=.006). Significant positive correlations were found among patients’ safety perceptions, knowledge, and participation. Factors significantly influencing patient participation included safety practices (B=0.53), activities to ensure safety (B=0.37), and trust in the medical system (B=0.44), which are subdomains of patient safety perception. The regression model explained 73.0% of the variance in patient participation.
Conclusion
To improve patient participation, it is essential to develop and implement educational programs focused on enhancing patients' perceptions and knowledge of safety. Such programs should take into account factors, such as patient age, previous hospitalization experience, and previous safety education experience.
